The Best Journey I Ever Took: My Toastmaster’s Journey

Image
“Hello Deepthi, Welcome to our club. So have you heard about toastmasters before? ” asked the club Vice President Education of the Punggol Park CC Toastmasters Club, the club of the World Champion of Public Speaking 2016, Darren Tay. I smiled at him recollecting my days at The Orators Toastmasters Club and how I used to say the same lines to the first time visitors of the club. I replied, “Yes, I do. I have been associated with toastmasters since last three years; in fact I can happily say that I am a CC and CL. I was a part of The Orators Toastmasters Club in District 98. I am new to Singapore and I would like to continue my toastmaster’s journey here as well. ” He said, “That’s amazing. We are glad to have a visitor from District 98. I am sure you will enjoy our session today and I hope that you will join us soon.” I have visited five TM community clubs here until now and planning to visit more before I decide to settle for one to join. What I learned from visiting differ...

"Intro to the world of Introverts" : The speech I gave @Speakathon Event of The Orator's Toastmasters Club (18/12/2015)

After a long tiring week finally that glorious Friday has arrived   and there is this one question that is echoed everywhere in office “What’s you plan for the weekend?” And usually my answer to this question is “I am planning to stay at home and read a novel”. For which I am fired back with accusations like “What kind of person spends weekends hunched over a novel rather than having fun? You know what… you should go get a life” Good afternoon dear friends, Let me introduce you to the world of an introvert.   Like me there are many introverts who are often accused for being less outgoing. For a long time I too felt guilty. Every time I got this message that somehow introverted style of being was not the right way to go and that I should try to be more of an extrovert. As a kid I was a hardcore introvert. Things were difficult for me when I joined school. All the parents wanted their kids to sit beside me because I was the quietest kid in the class. Su...

My 11th speech @toastmaster's club :THE STONECUTTER

All of us present here have certain dreams and wishes. It is good to have those dreams and wishes but sometimes we have to acknowledge that this moment is enough. Sometimes we focus so much on what we don't have that we fail to see, appreciate, and use what we do have. Sometimes we say “Only if I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.” But that’s not true. If we are not content with what we have, we would not be satisfied if it were doubled. Toastmaster and my dear friends To make this more clear to you Let me share a Japanese folktale Once upon a time there lived a stonecutter, who went every day to a great rock in the side of a big mountain and cut out slabs for gravestones or for houses. He understood very well the kinds of stones wanted for the different purposes, and as he was a careful workman he had plenty of customers. For a long time he was quite happy and contented, and asked for nothing better than what he had. Now in the mountain dwelt a spirit which now...

The gift of time

The gift of TIME…(My 9th speech at Toastmasters Orators Club)

Recently an advertisement of titan watches caught my attention... Set against the backdrop of festive night in Paris, it features actress Kalki smiling at a family celebrating Diwali nearby. Her husband joins her and notices the celebrations. He proceeds to click a picture of it on his mobile. Annoyed Kalki asks him what she must do to get his undivided attention and complains to him that, he is spending more time with phone rather that spending time with her. Guy replies, “Come on yaar..It was you who gifted the phone to me, why are you jealous of it now?” Then she asks him a wonderful question “If I were to gift you 'time', will you spend that with me?” and while saying so she slips a watch onto his wrist. Good afternoon to one and all... That advertisement did not really make me appreciate the beauty of titan watches, but it did make me realize the importance of spending time with loved ones. Many things aren’t equal for all of us, but everyone gets same 24 hour...

You cannot measure courage

"Strength is measured in pounds. Speed is measured in seconds, courage? You cannot measure courage."  This was the message proclaimed in the video named celebrate humanity framed by international Olympic committee after witnessing a courageous act by an athlete in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 1991, Derek Redmond, Great Britain's best runner in the Men's 400 Meter event broke his own record (set in 1987) by 1/100th of a second. It was a National record that he held going into the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Derek's life goal was to win a Gold Medal in these games. The day came for the semi-finals in the 400 meters and Derek knew this would be the race of his life. Up against the world’s best runners, he knew that he had to do his best. When the gun sounded Derek got off to a great start. Then suddenly about 250 meters from the finish Derek heard a pop, followed by a shooting pain that ran up his leg. His tendon had just torn. His face t...
